How to Repot a Cactus

Repotting a cactus may seem like a prickly task, but with the right approach, it can be a breeze. Whether your cactus has outgrown its current pot or needs fresh soil, here’s a detailed guide to help you through the process.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • New pot
  • Cactus mix or well-draining soil
  • Gloves
  • Tongs or newspaper

Step 1: Choose the Right Time

Spring is the ideal time to repot your cactus when it’s entering its growing season. This allows the plant to recover more quickly from the stress of repotting.

Step 2: Prepare the New Pot

Choose a new pot that is slightly larger than the current one. Ensure it has drainage holes to prevent waterlogging. Fill the bottom with a layer of cactus mix or well-draining soil.

Step 3: Wear Protective Gear

Put on gloves to protect your hands from the cactus spines. If the cactus is particularly prickly, use tongs or wrap it in newspaper for easier handling.

Step 4: Remove the Cactus

Gently tilt the current pot on its side and tap its base to loosen the cactus. Grasp the cactus near its base and wiggle it out of the pot. Be careful not to damage the roots.

Step 5: Inspect and Trim Roots

Examine the roots for any signs of rot or damage. Trim away any unhealthy roots with clean scissors or pruning shears. This encourages new root growth in the fresh soil.

Step 6: Place in the New Pot

Set the cactus in the center of the new pot. Adjust the level of the soil beneath it so that the top of the root ball sits about an inch below the rim of the pot.

Step 7: Add Soil

Fill the remaining space around the cactus with cactus mix or well-draining soil. Gently tamp down the soil to secure the cactus in place. Leave a small space at the top to allow for watering.

Step 8: Water Sparingly

After repotting, avoid watering your cactus for a week or two to let any root injuries heal. Resume regular watering but always allow the soil to dry out between waterings.
